Metabolisable energy, NEm and NEg for commodities and rations. Work forward from an analysis, or backward from a net energy value or pen performance.
Type a value in any box and the rest solve from it. The box you typed in stays fixed when you change equations above.
Enter what the lab reported, as % of dry matter. Every equation that has the inputs it needs is calculated, so you can see how far they disagree.
Filled dots are equations written for the selected feed type. Hollow dots are calculated but were developed on a different class of feed.
Enter each ingredient with its dry matter, inclusion and one energy value. Ingredients can be entered as ME, NEm, NEg or TDN; the rest is solved with the equations selected above.
Type or pick an ingredient name from the library to fill in its dry matter and energy. You can still overwrite either value for this ration.
Net energy is additive across ingredients, so the weighted sum is the value to formulate on. Running the blended ME through the cubic gives a slightly different answer because the cubic is curved; the gap shows how much.
The built-in values are indicative starting points, not analyses. Edit them to your own figures; changes save in this browser only. Use Download or Copy to back up the list or move it to another computer. NEm and NEg are optional: leave them blank to calculate them from ME with the equations selected above.
Closeout data gives the dietary net energy the cattle actually performed on. The same pen run the other way gives the gain a formulated diet should have produced.
Zinn and Shen quadratic: solves NEm from intake, maintenance and retained energy, with NEg = 0.877 × NEm − 0.41.
Energy is per kg of dry matter. DE, ME and NE in the North American equations are in Mcal; the Australian and UK prediction equations give ME in MJ. 1 Mcal = 4.184 MJ.
